Sky AdSmart Advertising in the UK

Sky Media advertising UK airtime buying

Sky AdSmart is addressable TV: households watching the same programme on Sky can see different ads, chosen by where they live and what kind of household they are. You buy it on impressions rather than national airtime, so the entry cost is far lower than a linear campaign and you pay only for the homes you want. The catch is that each impression costs more than linear, you are buying households rather than individuals, and scale is capped by the size of the addressable footprint.

How AdSmart works

On a normal linear break, every home watching sees the same ad. With AdSmart, the Sky box or platform holds a set of ads and plays the one that matches the household’s profile, replacing the linear spot in that slot. A family in one town might see a local car dealer. The retired couple next door, watching the same programme, might see a care-home advert or a national brand’s linear spot.

It runs on Sky’s own boxes and platforms, and Sky has extended it to some partner platforms. Coverage has changed over time, so check which platforms, channels and on-demand services are currently AdSmart-enabled before you assume the whole Sky base is available. It also runs only on inventory Sky controls. Channels sold by other sales houses won’t carry your AdSmart ad, even when they are watched on a Sky box.

What you can target

AdSmart targeting works at household level. It uses geography and household attributes such as lifestage, family composition, household type and interests, built from Sky’s customer data and third-party classifications. Some advertisers can also match their own customer data to target, or exclude, existing customers. That needs a data agreement and takes time to set up. The attribute menu changes, so ask for the current list rather than working from an old deck.

Targeting layers multiply down. Each one you add shrinks the pool of eligible homes. A plan targeting families, in three postcode districts, with a particular income profile, can end up with too few homes to deliver meaningful frequency in the campaign window. We usually start with geography plus one or two attributes and only tighten once the first campaign shows where response comes from.

Postcode targeting

Postcode targeting is the most-used AdSmart feature, and it is what makes TV practical for businesses with a defined catchment: a car dealership, a regional chain, a new housing development, a private school, a clinic, a franchise territory. You pick the postcode areas, and only Sky homes in them see the ad. You can also run the logic in reverse and exclude areas where you don’t trade, which a national or even regional linear buy can’t do.

Three practical points decide whether a postcode campaign works:

Regional targeting

For larger areas, AdSmart can target by region: a nation, a TV region or a custom cluster of areas that matches your store network rather than a broadcaster’s map. That is the key difference from regional linear TV. ITV’s regional airtime is sold by broadcast region, whose boundaries were set by transmitters rather than by your sales territories. AdSmart lets you draw your own lines.

The trade-off is reach. Regional linear on a big ITV1 programme can put your ad in front of a large share of a region in one break. AdSmart reaches only Sky homes, one impression at a time. For a regional advertiser the right answer is often both: linear airtime to build reach across the region, and AdSmart to add frequency in the priority postcodes or to reach areas the broadcast region doesn’t cover. If you want a sense of how linear regional pricing varies, our ITV1 Adults CPT by region page shows the market data by area.

How AdSmart is bought and what it costs

AdSmart is bought on impressions at a CPM. It’s not bought on BARB impacts at a CPT like linear airtime. The CPM rises as you add targeting layers, so a tightly defined campaign costs more per impression than a broad one. Even untargeted, an AdSmart impression costs more than the equivalent linear impact. You’re paying a premium for not buying the homes you don’t want. We won’t quote a minimum spend or a rate card here, because both move and depend on the targeting. Get a current quote for your specific build.

The fair comparison is cost per relevant home, not cost per impression. If your business serves a fraction of a TV region, a regional linear buy wastes most of its impacts on people who can’t become customers. AdSmart’s higher CPM can still come out cheaper once that waste is stripped out. If your audience is broad and national, the premium rarely pays back and linear or BVOD will be more efficient.

The lower entry point is why AdSmart matters to smaller advertisers. Thinkbox reported that in 2025, 598 advertisers spent under £50k on TV in the year, more than 400 spent under £25k and more than 200 spent under £10k, among 984 new TV advertisers (up 6% year on year). Addressable TV is a big part of how businesses that size get on screen. Our page on TV advertising for small businesses covers the other routes.

AdSmart campaign reporting

AdSmart reporting comes from Sky’s own platform data, not the BARB panel you use for linear spot ratings, so it is reported in impressions. A useful end-of-campaign report should show:

Sky has offered uplift and effectiveness studies on AdSmart campaigns, typically comparing exposed and unexposed households on brand or response measures. What’s available depends on campaign size and current Sky policy, so ask when you book, not afterwards. For response campaigns, your own data is often the better test. Compare calls, web visits, leads or sales in targeted areas against similar areas you held out. That is the same logic we use in DRTV response analysis.

Two warnings on reporting. Don’t add AdSmart impressions to linear impacts and call the total “TV reach”. They are different currencies, and the same home can be counted in both. And be wary of results that look very strong on a tiny targeted base. Small samples produce big swings, so a strong first campaign needs repeating before you move serious money on the back of it.

The limitations to plan around

AdSmart works best as one part of a plan built around Sky’s linear offer. Our Sky Media advertising guide covers the rest of the portfolio.

Questions

What is Sky AdSmart?

It is Sky’s addressable TV product. Different households watching the same programme can be shown different ads, based on their location and household profile. It runs on Sky’s platforms and some partner platforms, on Sky-sold channels and on-demand inventory.

How much does Sky AdSmart cost?

It is priced on a CPM that rises as you add targeting. Entry is much lower than national linear TV because you only buy the homes you target, but each impression costs more than a linear impact. Get a current quote for your specific targeting rather than relying on published minimums.

Can you target TV ads by postcode in the UK?

Yes. AdSmart lets you target, or exclude, Sky homes by postcode area. Check how many addressable homes the area holds before you set the budget, so the campaign can build enough frequency.

Is Sky AdSmart better than regional TV advertising?

It depends on your catchment. AdSmart wins when your trading area is small or doesn’t match TV region boundaries. Regional linear wins when you need fast reach across a whole region. Many regional advertisers use both.

How do you measure an AdSmart campaign?

Start with impressions delivered, completion rate and reach and frequency from Sky’s reporting. Then compare response in targeted areas with areas you held out, and ask Sky whether an uplift study is available for your campaign size.
