A quiet weekend market — no UK trade has published since Friday, so this is a 72-hour sweep. Midnite takes the NFL’s UK and Ireland betting rights as the London games run, Freemans puts a multi-million-pound Q4 launch into CTV, FAST and radio host reads, and WPP names a new creative chief.

Midnite buys the NFL’s UK shop window — and the timing is the point

SBC News reported on Wednesday that Midnite, the London-based challenger bookmaker, is now the NFL’s sports betting partner across the UK and Ireland under a multi-year deal with exclusive sportsbook rights. The package covers broadcast, content, free-to-play, live games and fan engagement, licensed NFL marks including the Shield and the Super Bowl logo, and a season-long branded content programme. No value or term dates were disclosed. Jonathan Shaw, Midnite’s vice-president of growth, said the NFL “has built an incredible following across the UK and Ireland”; SBC puts that at more than 17 million people.

The read for UK buyers is the calendar, not the badge. The Philadelphia Eagles meet the Jacksonville Jaguars at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium today, and the Jaguars play the Houston Texans at Wembley on Sunday 18 October. Midnite has taken category exclusivity around a fixture window no rival UK operator can buy into, in a sport whose UK audience skews younger and more digital than the Premier League base everyone else is already bidding against.

Analysis: the squeeze will show in price, not availability. Operators locked out of official association will push into the surrounding inventory — live-sport BVOD and CTV breaks, sports digital audio, social and affiliate content around the London fixtures — and that is where the next fortnight’s rates move.

Market, audiences and spend

More About Advertising on 8 October carried the channel split behind WARC’s global forecast, covered here on Friday: social fastest at 21.3%, video on demand up 15.1%, retail media 14.3%, search 14.2% and digital out of home 13.7%. These are global figures with no UK breakout — directional for UK planning, not a UK spend read.

Separately, Lumen’s Mike Follett argued in The Media Leader on 8 October for “cumulative attention” — the total attention a campaign accrues — in place of effective frequency. That is the author’s proposition, not a standard, but it is the argument UK sellers will use to defend high-attention formats in Q1 talks.

Freemans puts a brand relaunch into CTV, FAST and host reads

Prolific North reported on 8 October that Bradford-based Freemans has relaunched around women over 40 behind a multi-million-pound Q4 campaign; no exact figure and no agencies were named. The plan is unusually legible: connected TV, digital video, print and national radio, with inventory named as YouTube, Discovery, Channel 5, Pluto TV and Samsung Ads, plus Greatest Hits Radio and Magic Radio. The radio element uses pre-recorded host endorsements from Zoe Ball, Kate Thornton, Gaby Roslin and Nicki Chapman rather than scripted reads, weighted to evenings and weekends to catch second-screen browsing. The claim that this group spends £92bn a year and drives 93% of household purchasing decisions is Freemans’ own figure; Prolific North cites no independent source.

Analysis: a national retailer skipping linear spot TV for FAST, CTV and endorsed radio is the clearest Q4 signal of the week — Pluto TV and Samsung Ads alongside Channel 5 is a planner treating FAST as reach, not experiment. Gambling advertisers, shut out of most daytime sport inventory, should read the endorsed-host format closely: it buys warmth a compliance-constrained script read cannot.

Clients on the move

Shelter has appointed MediaCity agency Meanwhile to its Winter Appeal, its biggest campaign of the year, after a pitch, Prolific North reported on 9 October. Head of marketing Lizzy Brabner said the appeal wants to “land that message with an even bigger audience”, with a greater focus on earned media; no paid channels or spend disclosed.

People

WPP chief executive Cindy Rose has named Tyler Turnbull, global chief executive of McCann, to lead WPP Creative, succeeding John Cook, More About Advertising reported on 9 October. Rose said Turnbull has the “ambition, global perspective and creative conviction” for the role. MAA adds — as its own reading rather than company statement — that Cook’s deputy Eric Campbell had been expected to succeed him and is now set to run an expanded VML. How the remit splits between the two is unconfirmed.

At the Gambling Commission, SBC News reported on 9 October that the permanent chief executive role is advertised at £190,000, with chair Ruth Evans writing the specification. Andrew Rhodes stepped down in March; Sarah Gardner has been acting chief executive since then. SBC notes the vacancy lands with financial risk assessments still contested, a tax regime changed on 1 April and more duty expected at the 28 October Budget.

Online and connected TV

Advanced Television reported on 9 October that Samsung TV Plus has expanded its partnership with Zoo 55, ITV Studios’ FAST arm, ahead of MIPCOM. The Voice Global launches as a Samsung TV Plus exclusive carrying the current US season in the UK and Scandinavia, and VICE and VICE: Dark Side Of launch in the UK this month. How advertising on the new channels is sold was not stated, so treat UK availability as unconfirmed until Samsung Ads or ITV confirm the route.

Gambling advertising

iGaming Business reported on 9 October that bet365 was named the UK’s best casino app in Eilers & Krejcik’s 1H26 Product Analysis, which the operator tied to its “We Know Betting” platform. This is a commercial research firm’s scored product ranking, not audited audience or performance data, and iGB published no channels, agency or spend behind the platform.

No gambling rulings this week: the ASA’s latest batch, dated 7 October, is six upheld rulings against online pharmacy and health advertisers over prescription-only medicine promotion and unevidenced medicinal claims. The Gambling Commission has published nothing since the 7 October £5m casino penalty already covered here.
